1. Engine overheating
The temperature gauge climbing past its normal midpoint is the clearest warning. A radiator that has lost cooling capacity, from internal clogging, a leak that drops the coolant level, or fins packed with debris, can't shed enough heat, so engine temperature rises.
Watch for the pattern: overheating that gets worse in stop-and-go traffic but improves at highway speed points to airflow or fan problems. Overheating that's constant regardless of speed points at the radiator core itself or a low coolant level.
2. Coolant puddles under the front of the car
Fresh coolant is bright green, orange, pink, or blue depending on formulation, and it has a distinctly sweet smell. 5. Visible corrosion, staining, or bent fins
Open the hood and look at the radiator directly. White or chalky deposits along the tank seams mean coolant has been weeping and evaporating there. Green, orange, or pink crust is dried coolant residue marking the leak point.
Also check the fins on the front face. Fins that are bent flat, packed with bugs and road debris, or physically eaten away by corrosion reduce surface area and cut cooling capacity. Light bending can be combed back into shape; heavy corrosion cannot be fixed.
6. Heater blowing cold air

What Causes Radiator Failure
Radiators fail for a handful of predictable reasons:
Plastic tank fatigue. Most modern radiators use aluminum cores with molded plastic end tanks. Those tanks endure thousands of heat cycles from ambient to 220°F, and the plastic becomes brittle over time. Cracks at the tank or at the crimped seam are the number one failure mode on vehicles with 100,000+ miles.
Internal corrosion. Coolant contains corrosion inhibitors that deplete on a schedule, typically every 5 years or 100,000 miles for long-life formulations. Once depleted, the coolant becomes mildly acidic and attacks the aluminum core from the inside, producing the sludge and pinholes that cause both clogging and leaks.
Road debris impact. The radiator sits at the very front of the vehicle behind the grille. Rocks, road salt, and minor front-end collisions damage fins and puncture tubes. Salt exposure in winter climates accelerates external corrosion considerably.

Transmission cooler failure. Many radiators contain an integrated transmission fluid cooler in the bottom tank. Can a Radiator Be Repaired?

Radiators are a binary component. There's no clutch material to wear, no bearing to develop play, no gradual efficiency curve. A radiator either holds pressure and moves heat, or it leaks and doesn't. A used unit that passes a pressure test is functionally equivalent to a new one.

What extends radiator life:
- Change coolant on schedule. Every 5 years or 100,000 miles for long-life (OAT/HOAT) coolant, every 2-3 years for conventional green.
